InterCommunity Cancer Centers has announced a new way to treat skin cancer.

June 14, 2009

It's called the Valencia Applicator and it's a non-surgical treatment for patients with small and large superficial skin cancer.

The Valencia Applicator was developed in collaboration with La Fe University Hospital in Valencia, Spain. The applicator is shaped like cup and has a flattened filter to evenly distribute doses.

"I'm excited to offer our skin cancer patients this new applicator for HDR brachytherapy," said Hal M. Jacobson, medical director of the InterCommunity Cancer Centers in Lady Lake. "We believe that Valencia will provide a more precise and effective alternative to electron beam irradiation for the treatment of superficial skin cancers."

The applicator can also treat lesions around the eyelids, ear and nose and it can treat small tumors.

"New applicators such as Valencia help us deliver higher doses of radiation with fewer complications and side effects," said Jacobson. "With the multi-disciplinary approach to treating malignancies today, our new applicator will undoubtedly result in optimal results for the patient."
