INTERCOMMUNITY CANCER CENTERS NOW USING CALYPSO®, “GPS FOR THE BODY”™ FOR TREATMENT OF PROSTATE CANCER
ICCC is the First in Lake, Sumter and Marion Counties to Offer New Precision-Guided Technology
LADY LAKE, Fla. - March 07, 2008 — InterCommunity Cancer Centers announced today that it is the first cancer-care program in Lake, Sumter and Marion Counties to provide prostate cancer patients access to the Calypso® 4D Localization System™ for use in prostate cancer radiation treatment.
This new form of technology, called GPS for the Body®, allows precision-guided radiation therapy delivery to the prostate with continuous, prostate-motion detection and monitoring. Essentially, Calypso tells the physician where the tumor location is at all times during daily radiation treatments. Movement of prostate tumors can occur during and in between treatments as a result of body physiology. This daily organ motion can result in ineffective delivery of radiation and damage surrounding healthy tissues. Calypso was designed to “track” the location of the prostate tumor during oncology treatments to precisely and continuously target the delivery of the external beam to the position of the tumor. |
“New technologies such as the Calypso System deliver higher doses of radiation with fewer complications and side effects than patients typically experience when treated with conventional radiation therapy,” said Hal M. Jacobson, M.D., founder and President of InterCommunity Cancer Centers and Cancer Care Associates, P.A. “With the multi-disciplinary approach to treating malignancies today, our new technology will undoubtedly result in optimal results for the patient.
