InterCommunity Cance Centers of Leesburg and Lady LakeHost First Cancer Survivor's Eventer November 4th, 2011 - Cancer Patients to Share their Personal Stories of Survival

WHAT:
To honor local cancer survivors and their indomitable spirit, InterCommunity Cancer Centers (ICCC) of Leesburg and Lady Lake will host its first Cancer Survivors’ Reunion on Friday, November 4th. Highlighting the event will be a special presentation made by Hal M. Jacobson, M.D., medical director of ICCC and special guest speaker and breast cancer survivor Pat Stanton, billing coordinator at ICCC.

Those in attendance will enjoy great food, refreshments, prize giveaways and live entertainment while sharing their own personal stories of survival. Dr. Jacobson and ICCC radiation oncologists Dr. Herman Flink and Dr. Bobby Harrison will also be available to provide a tour of the cancer center as well as answer any questions.

“As cancer specialists, we continue to work diligently to find new radiation and drug therapies to improve survival rates. However, we must not forget the emotional impact cancer has on patients and their families. By hosting events such as the Cancer Survivors’ Reunion, we are providing a nurturing environment that enables survivors to share their experiences and hopefully lend support to those patients recently diagnosed,” said Dr. Jacobson.

For Belleview resident Pat Stanton, this event takes on special meaning as she celebrates her 10-year anniversary as a stage II breast cancer survivor. Stanton, 56, had undergone a lumpectomy to remove a malignant tumor in her right breast. She stresses to friends and family the importance of self-examination and believes she would have caught it earlier if she had remained more vigilant about them.

“Self-exams are absolutely critical for both women and men,” explained Stanton. “Breast cancer does not have to be the end of the world for those who are diagnosed. With routine self-exams and annual mammograms this terrible disease does not have to be a death sentence.”
